It is possible to use the LuCI web interface or the Serial link for the advanced configuration of the router. Note that when you are using an unusual setup, some of the mentioned tutorials might not work as intended.
You can find a couple of hints here, in case that there's something wrong with the router. If you have a different problem don't hesitate and try to ask for an advice on our discussion board.
Because every situation is a bit different it is necessary to think whether the particular step makes sense when following the manuals.
Depending on the nature of your problem a several approaches can be used to solve it.
In case the router is not working at all or it is not possible to access the internet you can check:
The router is not running when no LED is shining. That means that there is probably some power related problem.
If the WAN LED is not shining make sure that the modem or other provider's device is turned on and is connected to the router using an appropriate cable. Try to change the cable between the router and the device to make sure.
When the LAN LED connected to your PC is not shining make sure your computer is turned on and it's properly connected to the router.
In case when the WiFi light is not shining check the settings whether the WiFi is enabled.
In case the router stops responding you can reset the router by pressing the reset button. If you can't reach the button, you can try to press it using a pen.
The another way to reset the router is using the web interface. You can find the reset button on the Maintenance tab.
Wait untill the router is booted. A successful boot is indicated by a short blink by all the LEDs in blue and green color.
If you stored the configuration backup (in configuration interface on tab Maintenance) and you manage to break the configuration somehow you can try to restore the configuration from the Maintenance tab.
This will erase all settings and data stored on the router.
Router can be restored to the factory settings in the case of software breakage, fatal misconfiguration or forgotten password.
To restore the setting hold the reset button for more the 6 seconds (till the LED stops blinking and starts to shine permanently). The process of restoration is indicated using the lights. Green color indicates the moment when it is still possible to cancel the restoration by unplugging the power from the router. Don't detach the power after the LEDs turn red. If the router is turned off during this phase the software will be left in an undefined state and you'd need to perform the restoration once more.
Even though the guide asks you to register the router in the last step there's no need to register the router again if you've already done so before.
After the successful restoration the router reboots. The successful boot is indicated by the green and blue light blink.
It is necessary to set up the router again. Attach your computer to one of the LAN ports and browse to the url http://192.168.1.1.
If you have a configuration backup you can load it after the password is set and skip the rest of the wizard.
The router has a serial link, which can be used to control the router and monitor error reports, it also displays the booting progress and it doesn't require networking to be set up properly. We have a separate manual for advanced users on how to connect your router through the serial link.
These are only some of the usual situations which might occur. You might use these tutorials when you get into a similar situation.
If you forgot the password of your router you can reset your router into factory settings. Then set a new password during the initial step.
The password is not restored from the backup. Therefore you can safely restore the router settings from a backup.
The second option is to connect a serial link and delete the old password.
uci delete foris.auth uci commit
Afterwards you can get into the administration interface of the router with an empty password. Set the new password immediately, otherwise anyone could log in with an empty password afterwards. Note that this step will delete only the password to the basic web interface. The password for the for the advanced web interface can be reset using the basic web interface.
Nonfunctional Internet connection can be caused by several reasons. You need to analyze the problem first before you can solve it.
First perform the basic checks. If it doesn't help connect to the web interface of the router. If you are not able to connect to the web interface the problem probably lies between your PC and the router.
Also try to remember whether you've recently performed any changes in the settings of your router.
You can perform the connection test in the DNS tab of the web interface. Your Internet connection might start working as a side effect of the test. When the router claims that everything is working fine try to connect your PC to the Internet again.
Your Internet connection might actually work even when IPv6 is not working. IPv6 is a newer version of protocol used for transferring data over the Internet. Nowadays the IPv4 is still fully supported and is sufficient for daily use. However IPv6 is still not supported in couple of places. So when the test shows some IPv6 related error it could mean that your Internet provider does not support IPv6. On the other hand when IPv4 is not working the usefulness of you Internet connection will be significantly limited.
If your connectivity is working but DNS does not try to change the DNS forwarding settings. Also you might want to check your current time (in LuCI, in section System → Time synchronization).
Thehe router verifies the signatures of DNS records using DNSSEC for security reasons. Each signature is valid only during some period of time. If the system clock of the router differs significantly (months) from the actual time the signatures are considered invalid and DNS does not work. This might cause that the time synchronization will stop working as well.
If the connectivity is not working but the gateway is accessible the problem is probably at your internet provider.
In case when even the gateway is not accessible the problem might be between the router and the provider or on the provider's side. Check the connection settings (tab WAN), modem settings (or other device's settings) which is between the router and the provider) or whether the cables are connected properly. You also might try to restart both devices. If it doesn't help and you are sure that everything is working properly try to contact your Internet provider.
In case the test shows everything is fine the problem might be between the router and your PC.
If the device is connected (no matter whether the cable or WiFi is used) it is probable the problem lies somewhere in the settings of the router or PC.
We recommend to use auto configuration using DHCP. Check whether the DHCP is turned on. Observe the tab LAN on the web interface of your router and check your PC networking settings. Unplug and plug the device.
If you are using manual configuration make sure that the router is set as a default gateway and as a DNS server of your PC.
If you are unable to connect to WiFi try to perform the basic checks. Especially check the WiFi light and whether the antennas are properly attached.
Make sure that the WiFi password from the web interface of the router matches the password you are using from your device. Eventually you could try to use the QR code to configure your device.
Another problem might be the signal strength. Try to move the device closer to the router and make sure that the signal is not blocked (e.g. by a thick reinforced concrete wall).
